Have you ever felt the blow of betrayal? Once you have reached a certain age, trust me, heartache is one thing you will most likely experience.
That is why the Bible says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23, NIV).
The NKJV of this same passage reads, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”
Then the ERV translation breaks this verse down further by saying, “Above all, be careful what you think because your thoughts control your life.”
Plain and simple, be careful who and what you allow into your life.
Everything you do flows from your heart, so do not allow a whole bunch of junk to infiltrate the most intimate parts of you.
If you tell people all of your business, or fall in love with everyone who blinks at you, listen to ungodly music, watch every movie or television show, or reach for every sparkling opportunity, you will end up with a corrupt heart.
Then you will sink deeper into a demoralizing lifestyle because you will be led by your own corrupt heart instead of following the Word of God.
Therefore, guard your heart with the breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:14).
This does not mean you have to walk around being suspicious of everyone or everything, but it does mean you will have to tread circumspectly in all circumstance, and pray for wisdom before you make decisions about who or what you allow in your private life.
All our lives we hear people say they love us with all their hearts, or they are following their hearts. Well, be careful because if the person who is saying that is not following God, they are following a corrupt heart and loving you with that same devious heart.
How do I know his or her heart is devious? Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV) says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”
That is why God told Ezekiel, the prophet, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).
Prayer: Merciful God in heaven, forgive me for allowing all types of junk into my heart. Forgive me of_____________(name the sins). I now understand that I must guard my heart. I won’t be quick to trust everything and everyone. Now Father, fill me with Your Holy Spirit so I can have a heart of flesh (Your Spirit) instead of a heart of stone, which represents sin. Direct my life, Father. I surrender all to You in Jesus name. Amen.
