Running for his life: Jacob's life changing encounter with the Lord

Do you know God will still speak to you even after you have sinned against Him? In Genesis 27, Jacob and his mother Rebekah plotted together and ‘stole’ Esau’s blessings (the blessing that belonged to him as the firstborn son). You see, the Lord had informed Rebekah that Esau would serve Jacob (Genesis 25:23), so that was the reason why Jacob and Rebekah tricked Isaac.  They were attempting to help God in fulfilling that prophecy.

Soon after, Jacob had to relocate to Paddan Aram to live with his uncle, Laban, because Esau was going to kill him (Genesis 27:42).

When Jacob was on his way to his uncle’s place, he stopped at a certain place to sleep. That same night, “he had a dream in which he saw a stairway reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it” (Genesis 28:12). At the top of the stairway, Jacob saw the Lord, and that was when God blessed him, promising to multiply his descendants and to give them the land Jacob had recently slept on.

In verse 15, the Lord also vowed, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

When Jacob woke up, he was filled with awe and called that place Bethel, which means house of God. He then made a vow to God saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God” (verses 20-21). Jacob even pledged to give God a tenth of all God would give to him.

What can we learn from this true story?

No matter how much you have messed up, your heavenly Father can still use you for His glory. The Holy Spirit of God knocks at our hearts constantly, waiting for us to answer. Yes, He knows you have committed sins against Him, but He wants to speak to you because He sees the bigger picture of your life.

Jacob messed up and was running away to find refuge, and the Lord met him right at that moment. Perhaps you are fleeing your horrible past or some embarrassing situation. Well, the Holy Spirit has something He wants to tell you. There are promises the Father desires to express to you. And trust me, these blessings are coming to you in great abundance.

Stop running. Put your sinful nature to rest (sleep), so your spirit can see and hear from the Lord. Someone in your bloodline has already offered up prayers to God. And because God cannot lie, He is reaching out to you so you can obtain the promises God already established with your ancestors.

Didn’t God vow to prosper Abraham’s descendants? In Genesis 12:2, God said, “I will make you a great nation.” Then in verse 3 it reads, “And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Are we not the seed of Abraham?  Galatians 3:29 states, “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Rejoice man or woman of God. Jacob still received the promise even though he acted ungodly.

The Father extended mercy and grace to him. Likewise, you too have received redemption through the Blood of Jesus and are the seed of Abraham. And since you are a seed, you are forever blessed (achieving wealth on earth) and will live eternally with Jehovah.
