Names of God: Elohim, El Shaddai

Knowing the different names of God will help you as you pray, worship, and meditate. God is magnificent and prominent, so at times it is challenging for our human minds to perceive his majesty. However, as you begin to contemplate on the names of God, the crust will fall from your spiritual eyes and you will behold the King of kings in a new light.

In my previous article, you learned about one name of God, which is El. El means power and compassion.

Another name of God is Elohim (Eloah is the plural form). When you utter the name Elohim, you are confirming God is our Creator, you are affirming he is Mighty, and you are declaring he is Strong.

Elohim

Genesis 1:1 reads, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Our God is a wonderful originator. He can take nothing and develop astonishing creations. For instance, when the earth was formless, empty, and dark in Genesis 1:2, God splendidly transformed everything.

That reminds me of our lives before Christ. We were really without form, empty, dark, and had no sense of purpose. Then Elohim created a plan of salvation, sending Jesus to die for our sins, so we can be a new creation. No wonder Paul teaches, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

El Shaddai

Another name for God is El Shaddai, which means God Almighty. Genesis 49:24 states, “Yet his bow remained unmoved; his arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob…” Also, Psalm 132: 2 reads, “How he swore to the Lord and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob.” Like I explained in my previous article, we are not serving a spineless God. Our God is powerful (Sovereign) and will work mightily in our lives.

Final thought

Man of God, woman of God, you were created by Elohim, and you are protected by this same God who is referred to as El Shaddai. He loves you and calls you beautiful, and he will move mountains to protect you because he is powerful.

Lift up your hands and say, “Elohim-my Creator, El Shaddai-God Almighty, I surrender my life to you. Thank you for creating a mighty plan of salvation so I can be saved through Jesus Christ. Amen.”
