Names of God: El

Knowing the different names of God will help you as you pray, worship, and meditate. God is magnificent and prominent, so at times it is challenging for our human minds to perceive his majesty. However, as you begin to contemplate on the names of God, the crust will fall from your spiritual eyes and you will behold the King of kings in a new light.

Did you know El is used for God in the Bible? This word has several definitions, but today we will focus on just two meanings of El, power and compassion. Isaiah 9:6 reads, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Your God is mighty (Omnipotent)

This means he has the power to accomplish whatever. He can fix everything in your life right at this very moment. While you are singing to him, reading your Bible, parenting your children, ministering to your spouse, working, or facing an endless battle, remember to say El. As you utter, “El”, you are commanding your soul to believe God is powerful enough to transform any situation.

You are not worshiping a scrawny, fearful God. You are serving the Sovereign Creator of everything. Therefore, the next time you find yourself worrying about that bill, simply utter, “El!”

The next time you start to feel defeated, stare at a beautiful flower, a rainbow, a baby, the stars, the ocean, or the sun, and remind yourself that El created all of them. And if he can keep the sun elevated in the sky, he can heal your body, rebuild your broken marriage, correct your rebellious children, encourage your discouraged heart, or pay that past due bill.

Your God is compassionate

Another passage in the Bible that uses the word El is Nehemiah 9:31. “But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.” Our God’s nature is that of compassion.

He sympathizes with us when we are dejected. God is concerned about our sorrows and inadequacies. And when we disappoint him, God forgives us if we humble ourselves and ask for his forgiveness. Then he redeems us, which means he restores us back to worth, frees us from captivity, buys us back, and wins us back to his heart.

Final Thought

Remember the name El and recite it daily. As you release that word from your lips, you are reminding God that he is omnipotent and compassionate. Singing the name El is a way of affirming, “God is strong enough to protect me and compassionate enough to love me unconditionally.”
