Is the heart really desperately wicked?

“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love” (1 John 4-8, NIV).

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. Businesses have decorated their stores with plenty of red hearts, and there are plenty of romantic movies to watch on television this week.

During this time, you will hear people say, “I love you with all of my heart.” When you hear that statement, be sure to squint your eyes. Why? Because Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV) states, “The heart is deceitful [lying, untrustworthy and devious], above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

You do not want people loving you with their ‘natural’ hearts because people are fickle. They will love you in the morning and reject you in the evening.

Instead, you want people to love you with the love of Jesus because His love is pure.

According to 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV) God’s love is patient and kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. God’s love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.

Each day, the Lord will help us to give that type of love to others because we can never love on that level without divine intervention.
